Kilimanjaro Packing List: The Definitive Gear & Equipment Guide

What to Pack for Kilimanjaro: Expert Gear Guide

Packing correctly for Kilimanjaro is critical. Temperatures range from +30°C in the rainforest at the base to -20°C on summit night at the crater rim. Wind chill at the summit can make it feel even colder. The right layering system makes the difference between a comfortable, successful summit and an early turnaround. Here is our definitive Kilimanjaro gear list, refined through hundreds of guided treks.

Layering System

Base layer: Moisture-wicking thermal top and bottom (merino wool or synthetic — never cotton).
Mid layer: Fleece jacket or down sweater for warmth.
Outer shell: Waterproof, windproof Gore-Tex jacket and trousers. Essential at all altitudes.
Summit layer: A heavy down jacket rated to at least -20°C. This is your most important piece of clothing. Do not scrimp here.

Footwear

Well-worn (NOT brand new) waterproof hiking boots with ankle support. Gaiters to keep scree out of your boots on summit night. Warm wool or synthetic socks (bring 3–4 pairs). Camp sandals or lightweight shoes for use at camp.

Accessories

Trekking poles (highly recommended — they reduce knee strain on descent and provide balance on summit night), balaclava, warm beanie, neck gaiter, sun hat, full-coverage gloves and waterproof over-mittens, glacier sunglasses with side shields (UV is intense at altitude), headlamp with fresh batteries (critical for summit night).

Health & Hydration

Two 1-litre water bottles or a 2-litre hydration bladder (bladders can freeze at altitude — bring a bottle as backup), water purification tablets, personal first aid kit, blister treatment, altitude sickness medication (Diamox — see your doctor), sunscreen SPF 50+, and lip balm with SPF.

What Your Operator Provides
